Investigative Question or Issue: What were the
distinctive characteristics of Romanticism that influenced American art
and literature between 1800 and 1870?
Challenge:
Context for this challenge: The
intent of this challenge is to provide students with an opportunity to
demonstrate their understanding of the Romantic period in American art
and literature in a persuasive way. Students will need access to
research materials and multiple examples of art and literature from
this period. Students will also want to discuss the attributes of a
quality advertisement as they engage this challenge.
The Challenge: Your
team of two or three is an advertising agency that has been
commissioned to develop a TV sales campaign to sell American art and
literature of the Romantic period. You have been asked to create a TV
commercial no longer than 4 minutes in length that is designed to sell
two pieces of literature from two different genres or authors and one
painting from the Romantic period. The painting should be from the
Hudson School. Your audience will be a group of potential buyers
(fellow students with coupons to spend) who are interested in the
Romantic period. They will gather at breakfast to see your commercial
and make their purchases.
It is very important that your advertisment and the information it
contains about the Romantic period be of the highest quality. To that
end, please consider the following as you design your commercial:
- Make sure your commercial includes at
least 5 attributes of a quality advertisement
- Make sure you highlight at least 6 elements of Romantic art and
literature and interprete your examples of art and literature correctly
- Include a quote from some credible authority to support you claim
regarding the 6 elements of Romantic art and literature
- Make sure you use examples of at least two different genres or
authors of Romantic literarture in your commercial
Be creative in the design of your commercial; do not hesititate you use
props or costumes to enhance the quality of your work. Finally, be sure
that all group members do their fair share of the work and contribute
to the commercial itself.
You will have class time to prepare, but you must also work outside of
class. We will discuss the time parameters for this project in class.
