Investigative Question or Issue: How Are Adirondack Birds adapted to their environment?

Challenge:
Context for this Challenge: Students will need access to binoculars, age appropriate research materials regarding bird identification, and an opportuity to observe common Adirondack birds in the field.

The Challenge: Please form teams of two. Each team is to choose one species of bird that is common to the Adirondacks.  No two groups should choose the same bird.

Using a pair of binoculars, observe your bird in the field.

After consulting a variety of resources (books, encyclopedias, internet), research, plan and create a colorful and informative 24' x 36" poster display about your bird. This poster should be suitable for display in our classroom or school hallway. It should be neat and easy to read. All labels should be in cursive writing.

Be sure to document all the information you gather about your bird by making a list of the author, title, and page number of every book or web site you use. This list should be handed in as soon as your research is completed.

The information on the poster should answer the following questions:
1. What is the habitat of your bird?
2. Physiology- What does your bird look like? Pick three physical characteristics of your bird and show how these features are useful to the bird (body shape and weight, eyes, wings, feet, beak, head, color, sound). Are there any physical characteristics unique to your bird?
3. Behavior- How does your bird act when a) looking for food b) protecting its young c) faced with an enemy,  d) the weather changes (rains, turns cold, gets hot)
Are there any activities peculiar to your bird?
4. It what ways is your bird well adapted to its habitat? Be prepared to give an oral presentation to the class about your bird. When you present be sure to speak to the audience in a clear and loud voice. Please make eye contact with the audience rather than reading your presentation.
You will have 5 class periods to prepare your poster and presentation
