Investigative Question or Issue: Revisit main street, Old Forge, NY, by stepping back in time and taking a second look at the buildings we see - and don't see - everyday.

Challenge:

1.  Walking tour of main street, Old Forge, NY, with town historian, Peg Masters.  During the tour you'll be multitasking, listening, taking photos for future reference with disposable cameras and taking some quick notes. Ultimately, you'll choose an interesting building and recreate it as an acrylic painting.  You'll need a practice sketch using your photo research.

2.  Also required - you will become an expert concerning your chosen building and prove this in a written research paper.

3.  Many of us leave our hometown vowing "never to return".  We will be spending a month looking at main street with the hope that the things we have learned will encourage us to learn more.

Quality Standards:

The Project was begun May 12, 2004 - due date June 9,2004.

Organize your photos and notes - chose a building that you will research and use as the subject for your acrylic painting.  Work with other students, exchange photos and notes.

Do a sketch from the photo of your building - keep in mind interesting viewpoints, composition, unusual lighting - use color to enhance your sketch.

Prepare a 16"x20" masonite board using gesso.

Begin your painting experience, incorporate your own style, techniques, and past painting knowledge.

Remember to do ongoing research - books, websites, student notes, interviews - all will enhance your required paper.

And "in your own words" include a positive critique of your work.

Your finished painting will be displayed at the Hemmer Cottage, Old Forge, NY, during July.

Comments: The mission of the Town of Webb Schools, in collaboration with the community, is to foster academic excellence, create responsible citizens, and promote life-long learning.  My class and myself are indebted to the Historical Association of Old Forge and the Hemmer Cottage.  With their interest and support, this became more than just another assignment.
