Investigative Question or Issue:

Challenge:
Students will identify the EPT richness, total taxa richness, and percent model affinity score for their selected area.  Using the information collected students will asses the forest impacts on acquatic ecosystems.  Students will work on this lab in their lab groups with two students in the water collecting macroinvertabrates and two students on shore identify and catalog macroinvertabrets.  Once back at the classroom students will teach each other the processes of collecting and identifying macroinvertabrets.  Each indivdual will be required to identify accurately a known sample of macroinvertabrates.  Students will be taught to use collection and identifcation equipment needed to complete the processes.

Quality Standards:

  • Students will calculate EPT
  • Students will cac\lculate total taxa richness
  • Students will calculate percent model affinty
  • Students should be able to relate data to future labs and record important infromation in lab journals to be applied to other experimental designs.
  • Students should be able to accuratly idenitfy macroinvertabrate species using tree identification key.
