Investigative Question or Issue: How did folk music
and musical instruments reflect life in the Adirondack mountains during
the early 20th century?
Challenge:
Context for this Challenge:
Students should be asked an exploratory question,"What was life like
for people living in the Adirondacks early in the 20th century?"
Following a discussion and/or brainstorm to reveal prior knowledge,
students should research the following focus questions relating to the
inquiry above:
- What physical resources in the Adirondack region were available to
people at the time for making a living?
- What kinds of tasks and activities did people engage in on a daily
basis?
- What was going on historically and economically during this time in
the US that influenced life in the Adirondacks.
Finally, ask students to research the kinds of musical instruments that
were created and used in the Adirondack region during this period.
The Challenge:
In teams of 2 or 3, create a "playable" folk instrument and/or a group
of
folk instruments that is similar to the type created and used by people
living in the Adirondacks in the early 20th century. Be sure to use common
household or outdoor materials that may
have been used by Adirondack residents of the time to create music in
some manner.
After you have completed your instrument(s), each member should write a
one page typed essay explaining how you used your materials to produce
folk
music. You should also explain how the instrument and the music it
played reflected the conditions and resources of daily life of the
people living in the Adirondacks at the time. Be prepared to
make a short presentation to the class in which you demonstrate how the
instrument was made and
played.
To assist you in completing this project on
time, please complete a project
planning sheet showing each member’s assignments and deadlines for
their completion. Make sure all team members do their fair share of the
work.
|
Quality Standards:
1.)
Project planning sheet is filled out and tasks completed.
2.) All group members do their fair share of work
3.) The instrument (s) reflects knowledge of resources available in the
Adironadack region during the early 20th century and is playable.
4.) Each team member completes a one-page typed essay explaining how
the selected materials were used to make instruments of the time.
5.) The presentation demonstrates how the instrument was made and
played.
