Investigative Question or Issue: Can a hand-painted,
quilted wall hanging be created to represent the flora and fauna of the
Adirondack Mountains? (See related Science
challenge)
Challenge:
After
looking at websites and the pamphlet "The Adirondack Park", students
were instructed to use the computers and books in the library to
research the Adirondacks. They needed to know where they are and
gain an appreciation for them to complete the project.
A guest speaker, Sandra Hildreth, showed examples of her work, gave
background information, and talked about the importance of; artist
statements, painting on site, and learning from other artists.
A field trip was taken to the VIC at Paul Smith's with Mrs. Cook's
Biology classes to sketch, take photos, and gather information about
plants and animals at the VIC ( a small sampling of the
Adirondacks). Students were instructed to use this information
when brainstorming before creating their composition to paint on a
fabric block or canvas.
Examples
of Student Photos &
Paintings Final Landscape Quilt
Students were instructed to compare and contrast the realistic and the
abstract style of painting, previously studied by researching from the
internet and books from the library.

Quality Standards:
Painting
- using sketches and photos of VIC and information gathered by biology
classes about flora and fauna at the VIC to create a painting with
fabric paints on 12" squares of unbleached muslin.
These will be sewn together to create a quilted wall hanging to be
exhibited at the Remington Arts Festival in Canton, NY in October, 2004.
Write an artist statement about your painting
Compare and contrast abstract style (already researched and painting
created) to the realistic style of painting used to create the wall
hanging.
