Investigative Question or Issue: How can we encourage
Spanish speaking tourists to visit the Adirondack region?
Challenge:
Create
a travel brochure or slide show in a language other than English
(French, German, Swedish, etc.) that could be used to attract
non-English speaking tourists to our part of the Adirondack region.
Context for this Challenge:
Before issuing this challenge, the teacher will want to ensure access to
the appropriate computers and software (such as Publisher or
Powerpoint) necessary to complete this
project as written. Resource materials about the Adirondacks (such as www.adirondacks.com),
both text and online, should also be available. Students need to have
enough foreign language proficiency to be able to effectively compose
written material.
Directions: A student hand-out with the following requirements and a
deadline should be prepared
and copies of the Product Quality Checklist may be also be given out .
They may be modified to whatever the teacher feels appropriate for
students in his/her classroom.
|
Quality Standards:
- Product includes a map of the Northern Forest
region with at least eight physical features labeled.
- A section of the brochure or sequence
of slides
is devoted to each of the four seasons. All information in each of
these sections is in the language of the target non-English speaking
population
- The name of each season is
identified.
- Two or three weather conditions typical of the
season with suggested clothing to adapt to those conditions comfortably
are described. Four or five recreational activities
that are common during the season that may be of interest to the
tourist are described.
- Several visuals that give the
viewer a sense of what the season will “look like/feel like” when they
visit are included
- All information is accurate
- Language usage, vocabulary, and punctuation
are correct
- Product is engaging and visually appealing.
