Investigative Question or Issue: How might we capture the "essence" of a favorite spot through painting?

Challenge:
Context for this Challenge: The teacher will probably want to give the class this challenge prior to engaging in the process of selecting a "spot. While the final product of this challenge is produced by individuals, the process of decision-making about the "spot" creates an excellent opportunity to experience group collaboration. Once various locations are nominated for selection, the class might conduct a discussion in which the postive attributes of each nominee are considered with regard to lighting, interesting sounds, subject matter, texture, etc. The class should be invited to decide what constitues a final "choice".

The Challenge:
Using the materials provided by your teacher (ie, watercolors, paint, markers, etc.), create an original painting that captures the "essence" (using your sense of sight, sound, and touch) of a favorite location/"spot" within easy walking distance of your school that has been selected by your class.

Your painting
should include elements of texture, identifable features that can be seen, and locations of sounds that you have heard at the "spot". Additionally, the size of the objects depicted in your painting should be proportional to each other and the colors you use appropriate to the setting.

As a class we will spend several sessions at our "spot" observing at different times of the day.  What do you notice about the light as the sun is in a different position?  What do you notice about sounds you hear at different times of the day? You will need to use the observation skills of listening, looking, and feeling objects.

We will discuss in class how much time you have to complete this challenge.

Quality Standards:

- Painting include identifiable features
- Painting reflects observation skills of listening, looking and feeling objects
- Painting includes texture
- Painting includes locations of sounds painter has heard
- Sizes of objects in painting are proportional to each other
- Painter uses appropriate colors
- Painting is original ( your own perspective)

Comments: Nancy Brossard was the  artist-in-residence.  Nancy has spent a great deal of time painting on our nature trails and is familiar with the oxbow, which is where I would like the students to paint.  This will be part of unit on the Raquette River.  Our Core Knowledge Curriculum has us focus on the senses of sight, sound and touch, while discussing light and shadow use by artists.  This challenge addresses these areas of core knowledge, while instilling a sense of appreciation for the beauty of the Raquette River located in our backyard.
